If lung cancer is caught early?

What are the chances of getting rid of it? My grandmother was diagnosed with a pulmonary nodule and they are trying to find out if it is cancerous. She did smoke for 40 years and quit about 7 years ago. They said it may be harmless.. but if it is lung cancer I was wondering if they caught it early if she has a good chance to beat it.
